GYP’s annual selection of the most influential young professionals in Gwinnett

During THEYPARTY, we will highlight 35 influential young professionals in our community who are disruptors, innovators, and change-makers in their fields. Of those 35 individuals, one unique individual will be highlighted as GYP’s Young Professional of the Year. This prized individual will receive access to a myriad of opportunities, including one year of free admission to all GYP Connect, Grow, and Impact events, a designated GYP of the Year parking spot at the Gwinnett Chamber, and an invitation to serve on the GYP Advisory Board.

Applications for 35 Under 35 will open March 1 and close May 14.

Speaker Spotlight

Valyn Lyric Turner (she/her/hers) is a spoken word poet, actor, songwriter, and activist hailing from Atlanta, the original home of the Cherokee and Creek native nations. Valyn is currently a sophomore at Boston University where she double majors in Theatre Arts and Spanish. She has always found her home on stage performing through theatre, poetry, and music. In April of 2018 , she was able to share her passion for literature on the national stage as representative for the state of Georgia in Poetry Out Loud, a poetry recitation contest through the National Endowment for the Arts. Some of her acting credits include starring in the radio drama “Iris” on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, “Digital Citizenship” a local online safety series through GCPS TV, “Grounded” at Boston University, and more than 30 local and community theatre productions. Her work has been featured on numerous episodes of the podcast “The Only One in the Room” with Laura Cathcart Robbins. Her mission is to inspire, empower, and serve others through her craft.

Host Spotlight

Courtney Spencer holds a bachelor’s degree in Music with a concentration in Voice from Albany State University and a master’s degree in Strategic Communication from Troy University. She is the mother of 8-year-old, Cadence Joy, and they both have been proud residents of Gwinnett County for seven years.

Courtney is a seasoned Chamber professional. From 2011 to 2013, she worked at the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, where she served as the staff liaison for Emerge Albany, the young professionals arm of the Chamber. Courtney also spent two years at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, where she planned and executed more than 130 events each year as the Membership Services Coordinator. Courtney currently serves as Community Program Coordinator for Gwinnett County Outreach.

Courtney’s career and passion pursuits merge as community relations transitions into advocating for her community. As a lover of politics, Courtney strives to generate an understanding among the people in our society that extends beyond ideologies, particularly in her hosting and moderating endeavors. Courtney has moderated town halls for Gwinnett County State Court and Superior Court Judge candidates. She has also moderated discussions with the first female District Attorney of Fulton County, Fani Willis. As executive producer and host of You Be The Judge, Courtney shares the unbiased facts about political and social issues so that viewers can draw their own conclusions.

Beyond hosting and moderating, Courtney has served on the PG 4.0 Advisory Committee, and has been featured on CNN and Southwest Georgia’s Fox affiliate news channel.
